To make a hot cocoa mix gift jar, layer ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, ½ cup sugar with a pinch of salt, ¾ cup nonfat dry milk powder and ½ cup chocolate chips in a 1-quart jar, then fill the top with mini marshmallows. Tie on a tag with the mug instructions and it makes about ten rich mugs of hot chocolate.

It is one of the easiest homemade gifts there is: ten minutes, pantry ingredients, and a jar that looks good on any kitchen counter through the whole holiday season. For a gift that melts open in the mug, try hot cocoa bombs.

What goes into a hot cocoa mix gift jar?

The layers follow the same ratio as our homemade hot cocoa mix, sized for a standard 1-quart (32 oz) mason jar.

Layer (bottom to top)AmountWhy it is there
Unsweetened cocoa powder½ cup (43 g)The chocolate flavor; a dark first layer anchors the look
Sugar with a pinch of fine salt½ cup (100 g) + ¼ tsp saltSweetness; the salt rounds off cocoa’s bitterness
Nonfat dry milk powder¾ cupCreaminess, so the mix works with hot water too
Chocolate chips½ cupExtra richness as they melt
Mini marshmallowsTo the top, about 1 cupThe finishing layer that keeps the others in place

How do you layer the jar so it looks neat?

  1. Start with a dry jar. Any moisture makes cocoa and milk powder stick to the glass.
  2. Use a wide funnel, or a cone of parchment paper, so powders drop straight down without dusting the sides.
  3. Tap, do not press. After each layer, tap the jar gently on a folded towel to level it.
  4. Wipe the glass with a dry paper towel before the next layer if any powder clings.
  5. Fill to the top with marshmallows so the layers cannot shift on the way.

What should the gift tag say?

Write the instructions on a tag or a small card tied to the lid. This wording fits on a standard gift tag:

Hot Cocoa Mix. Set the marshmallows aside, then empty the jar into a bowl and whisk well. For one mug, stir 3 tablespoons of mix with 2 tablespoons of hot milk into a smooth paste, then whisk in 1 cup of hot milk. Top with marshmallows. Makes about 10 mugs.

The paste step matters: cocoa mixes far more smoothly when it is wetted with a little hot liquid first. Our guide to how to use cocoa powder explains why.

How can you change the jar for different people?

VersionSwap or add
PeppermintReplace the chocolate chips with crushed candy canes
Mexican-styleAdd 1 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne to the sugar layer
Dairy-freeLeave out the milk powder and note “make with oat or almond milk” on the tag
Less sweetCut the sugar to ⅓ cup and add a layer of dark chocolate chips
Kid-sizeUse a 1-pint jar and halve every layer

For a lower-sugar gift, our sugar-free hot cocoa mix layers just as nicely. If you are giving several jars for a party, pair them with ideas from our hot cocoa bar guide. For a bigger present built around the jar, see our hot chocolate gift set ideas for what else to put in the box.

How long does a hot cocoa gift jar keep?

Kept sealed in a cool, dry cupboard, the dry layers stay at their best for several months, in line with the dates on the cocoa, sugar and milk powder you started with. Marshmallows are the first thing to change texture, so for jars made well ahead, tuck the marshmallows into a small bag on top and add them just before giving. More on storing cocoa in does cocoa powder expire.

Which cocoa powder works best in a gift jar?

A plain, unsweetened cocoa with a rich color makes the most striking bottom layer and the deepest-tasting drink. Grevista is a single-ingredient natural cocoa powder from Vietnamese Trinitario cacao, and one 200 g box covers four gift jars. Compare the box sizes on the Grevista cocoa powder page.

Frequently asked questions

What size jar do you need for hot cocoa mix?

A 1-quart (32 oz) mason jar holds the full recipe above with marshmallows on top. A 1-pint jar takes a half batch.

Can you use hot water instead of milk?

Yes. The milk powder layer gives the drink body, so hot water works, although milk makes a richer mug.

Why do the layers mix together in the jar?

Usually because the jar was shaken or a layer was poured too fast. Pour through a funnel, tap gently and fill to the very top so nothing can move.
