No. Plain unsweetened cocoa powder contains no added sugar. The Grevista label shows 0 g of total sugars per tablespoon (6 g), and USDA lists about 1.75 g per 100 g, roughly 0.1 g per tablespoon, all of it naturally present. Added sugar only turns up in sweetened cocoa, hot cocoa mix and drinking chocolate.

Stand in the baking aisle with a tub of hot cocoa mix in one hand and a tin of plain cocoa in the other and the two labels tell very different stories. Here is how to read them, and the numbers behind each.

By weight, USDA’s hot cocoa mix entry carries about 37 times the sugar of plain cocoa powder (65.55 g against 1.75 g per 100 g).

Where does the small amount of sugar in cocoa powder come from?

USDA’s 1.75 g per 100 g is the sugar naturally present in the cocoa itself. It is not added sugar, which is why a plain cocoa label can read Added Sugars 0 g and list a single ingredient. At a tablespoon a time it rounds to zero, which is what the Grevista panel prints.

The gap is why the same chocolate-brown powder can sit in a low-sugar plan or in a dessert plan. If you are curious what is actually in the sweet version, how it behaves in a mug and when it makes sense, sweetened cocoa powder covers it, including how to turn plain cocoa into a sweet mix in five minutes.

Do Dutch-process cocoa and cacao powder have sugar?

No more than natural cocoa does. Alkalizing changes color and flavor, and USDA’s alkalized cocoa entry lists 1.76 g per 100 g against 1.75 g for natural. Cacao powder is ground cacao with no sugar added, so it reads like unsweetened cocoa on a label; the differences between the two names are in cacao vs cocoa powder.

What does zero sugar mean for baking, drinks and keto?

  • Baking: unsweetened cocoa leaves all the sweetness to the recipe, so the sugar in a brownie or cake is the sugar you measured. The cocoa powder baking guide shows how to set it.
  • Hot chocolate: stir in as much sugar as you like, or none. Our sugar-free hot cocoa mix keeps the sweetener out entirely, and the hot cocoa mix recipe uses real sugar at about 11 g per mug.
  • Keto-style eating: the Grevista label shows 3 g total carbohydrate and 1 g fiber per tablespoon, which is 2 g net carbs. The full label is on the cocoa powder nutrition facts page.
