Back to the Cocoa Powder Guide
Is cocoa powder keto? Yes. Plain unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder is keto-friendly: one tablespoon has about 3 g of total carbs and about 1 g of net carbs, and a ¼ cup has about 4.5 g net carbs, based on USDA FoodData Central values. The Grevista label lists 20 calories, 0 g sugar and 1 g fiber per 6 g tablespoon. What is not keto is cocoa that comes with sugar, such as hot cocoa mix.
So your jar of plain cocoa can stay. Here are the numbers, the products to skip and four easy ways to keep chocolate in a keto week.
How many net carbs are in cocoa powder?
Net carbs are total carbohydrate minus fiber. It is a counting shortcut used by keto plans, not a line on the official Nutrition Facts panel. Cocoa powder scores well because more than half of its carbohydrate is fiber: USDA lists 57.9 g carbohydrate and 37 g fiber per 100 g of unsweetened cocoa.
| Serving | Total carbs | Net carbs |
|---|---|---|
| Cocoa, 1 tbsp (5.4 g) | 3 g | About 1 g |
| Cocoa, 2 tbsp (10.8 g) | 6 g | About 2 g |
| Cocoa, ¼ cup (21.5 g) | 12 g | About 4.5 g |
| Grevista label, 1 tbsp (6 g) | 3 g | 2 g |
| Hot cocoa mix, 1 packet (28 g) | 23 g | About 22 g |
Labels round each line to whole grams and often use a slightly heavier tablespoon, so a label may show 2 g where the database shows about 1 g. For tracking, use the panel on the bag you own. Our cocoa powder nutrition facts page has the full label and the per-100 g values.
Which cocoa products are not keto friendly?
Cocoa itself is low in net carbs; the trouble starts when sugar is blended in. One 28 g packet of hot cocoa mix carries about 22 g net carbs and about 18 g of sugar, roughly twenty times the net carbs of a tablespoon of plain cocoa. Watch for these:
- Hot cocoa mix and instant drinking chocolate. Sugar is usually the first ingredient, often with milk powder. See pure cocoa powder vs hot cocoa mix for a side-by-side label check.
- Sweetened cocoa powder. It looks like baking cocoa but is pre-mixed with sugar. Our guide to sweetened cocoa powder shows how to spot it.
- Chocolate syrups and “chocolate flavored” powders. Built on sugar or corn syrup, with cocoa as a minor ingredient.
The fastest test is the ingredients list: it should say cocoa and nothing else. Then check the panel for 0 g added sugars. If you want a quick refresher on reading that line, see does cocoa powder have sugar.
Is cacao powder keto?
Yes, as long as it is unsweetened. Cacao and cocoa powder come from the same beans, and most products sold under the cacao name are natural, non-alkalized cocoa. Net carbs vary a little by brand, mostly because brands report fiber differently, so a quick look at the panel settles it. Our cacao vs cocoa powder guide explains the naming. Dutch-process cocoa is keto-friendly too: alkalizing changes color and flavor, not the carb picture.
What sweetener goes with cocoa powder on keto?
Unsweetened cocoa is bitter on its own, so the sweetener shapes the result. The common choices behave differently:
- Allulose dissolves easily in hot drinks and sauces and stays smooth when chilled.
- Erythritol blends measure about 1:1 with sugar. Use the powdered form in cold desserts, where granules can feel gritty.
- Monk fruit and stevia are very concentrated. Follow the package conversion, or buy a blend made for cup-for-cup measuring.
A pinch of salt and a little vanilla soften cocoa’s bitterness, so you need less sweetener.

How do you make keto hot chocolate with cocoa powder?
Whisk 1½ tablespoons (8 g) of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 to 2 tablespoons of granulated keto sweetener and a pinch of salt with 2 tablespoons of hot water into a smooth paste. Add ¾ cup (180 ml) unsweetened almond milk and ¼ cup (60 ml) heavy cream, then heat, whisking, until steaming (about 160°F / 70°C) without boiling. Finish with ¼ teaspoon vanilla. The cocoa adds under 2 g net carbs; check your milk and cream labels for the rest.
For a jar you can scoop from all winter, our sugar-free hot cocoa mix recipe works with a 1:1 sweetener; for the lowest carbs, leave out the milk powder and stir the mix into cream or almond milk instead. The classic method is in our hot chocolate recipe with cocoa powder.
What else can you make with cocoa powder on keto?
Cocoa pairs naturally with cream, coconut oil and nut butter. Four easy wins:
- Chocolate fat bombs. Stir ¼ cup (56 g) softened coconut oil, ¼ cup (64 g) unsweetened almond butter, 3 tablespoons (16 g) cocoa, 1 to 2 tablespoons powdered keto sweetener and a pinch of salt. Chill 20 to 30 minutes, roll into 12 balls and coat in unsweetened shredded coconut or more cocoa. Keep them in the fridge, because coconut oil softens at about 76°F (24°C). The rolling and dusting technique is the same as our chocolate truffles with cocoa powder.
- Five-minute mousse. Our chocolate mousse with cocoa powder is just cream, cocoa, sweetener and vanilla; swap the powdered sugar for a powdered keto sweetener.
- Chocolate whipped cream. The same swap turns our chocolate whipped cream into a topping for berries or coffee.
- Keto mocha. Whisk 1 to 2 teaspoons of cocoa into hot coffee with a splash of cream. Tips on mixing it smoothly are in cocoa powder in coffee.
How does Grevista cocoa fit a keto pantry?
Grevista is natural, non-alkalized cocoa with one ingredient and no added sugar, from single-origin Trinitario cacao grown in Đắk Lắk, Vietnam. Each 6 g tablespoon lists 20 calories, 3 g total carbohydrate, 1 g fiber and 0 g sugar, so you choose the sweetener.
Keto-friendly, just cocoa. Grevista is unsweetened, natural cocoa, what many shoppers call unsweetened cacao powder, with about 2 g net carbs per tablespoon on the label. See the Grevista cocoa powder page.
Frequently asked questions
Is cocoa powder keto friendly every day?
Yes, in normal amounts. A tablespoon or two a day adds about 1 to 2 g net carbs, which fits most keto plans.
Does unsweetened cocoa powder have sugar?
Very little. USDA lists under 0.1 g sugar per tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa, and the Grevista label shows 0 g.
Is Dutch-process cocoa keto?
Yes. Alkalizing darkens the color and mellows the flavor, but unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa has a similar carb count. See Dutch-process cocoa powder for baking differences.
Can I use cacao powder instead of cocoa powder on keto?
Yes, usually 1:1. Most cacao powder is natural, non-alkalized cocoa, so follow the usual natural vs Dutch rule when a baking recipe uses a lot of cocoa and only baking soda. Unroasted cacao tastes a bit more bitter and tart. For keto drinks and no-bake desserts, swap freely.
Cocoa is the easy part of a keto chocolate habit. Keep an eye on the total carbs from your milk, sweetener and add-ins, count them against your own plan, and chocolate can stay on the menu all year.
